Once you've decided your windows need replacing, the next question is usually when. Is there a best season for it? Will cold weather or summer heat cause problems? And how far ahead do you need to plan?

The good news for North Atlanta homeowners: our climate lets us install windows all year. But each season has its own pluses and trade-offs, and timing your order well can make the whole project smoother.

First, know the timeline

Replacement windows aren't pulled off a shelf. Each window is made to the exact size of your opening, so the project usually runs like this:

  • Free in-home estimate: about an hour. We measure every opening, show you samples and leave a written quote.
  • Your windows are built: about 5 to 7 weeks from the day you order, depending on the product and options.
  • Installation day: many whole-house projects take one to two days, and we replace one window at a time.

That means the best time to start is about six to eight weeks before you'd like the new windows in. If you want them before a particular date, such as the holidays, family visiting, or listing your home, count back from there.

Fall: our favorite season to install

If we had to pick one season, it would be fall. October and November in North Georgia usually bring mild days and cool nights, which is comfortable for your family while a window opening is briefly uncovered, and good working weather for sealing and finishing each window.

Fall also lines your new windows up for winter. You'll feel the difference on the first cold night, and you'll see it on your heating bills all season.

Winter: better than you might think

Many homeowners assume winter is off-limits. In Georgia it rarely is. Our winters are mild compared with most of the country, and because we work on one window at a time, each opening is only open for a short while before the new window goes in and is sealed. Your heat stays on and the rest of the house stays warm.

On the occasional freezing or icy day, we'll simply reschedule to keep the crew safe and make sure sealants cure properly. Winter is also a quieter time of year for home projects, which can mean more flexible scheduling.

Spring is when a lot of people start thinking about home projects, so it's a busy season for installers everywhere. The weather is pleasant, but you'll get the date you want more easily if you order in late winter.

Summer: fine, with a little patience for storms

Summer installs work well too. Afternoon thunderstorms are common here, so we keep an eye on the forecast and may start early or shift a day. Each opening is only uncovered for a short time, so your air conditioning keeps the house comfortable. And new Low-E glass starts cutting the heat coming through your windows right away.

When you shouldn't wait

Whatever the season, some problems are worth fixing sooner rather than later:

  • Soft or rotting frames and sills: moisture can spread into the wall around the window.
  • Windows that won't open, close or lock: that's a safety and security issue.
  • Cracked or broken glass: it lets in water and air, and it's a hazard.

If you're seeing any of these, it's better to get an estimate now than to wait for the "perfect" time. Read more in 7 signs it's time to replace your windows.

Is there a tax credit to wait for?

Not right now. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, which covered part of the cost of qualifying windows and doors, ended for projects installed after December 31, 2025. There's no federal credit to wait for. Your new windows still pay you back every month through lower heating and cooling costs and a more comfortable home. (For your own situation, check with a tax professional.)

The short answer

The best time to replace your windows in North Atlanta is when you're ready, about six to eight weeks before you want them installed. If you can choose, fall is hard to beat. Winter is a smart, often overlooked option, and spring rewards those who book early.
