Sliding or French? Compare space, light, security, cost and style to choose the right patio door for your home.
A patio door does a lot of work. It's a window, a door and often the main way you get to the backyard, deck or pool. When it's time to replace yours, most homeowners narrow it down to two styles: a sliding patio door or a French (hinged) patio door. Both are great choices — they just shine in different homes.
Sliding patio doors
Sliding doors have one or more panels that glide along a track. One panel stays fixed while the other slides past it.
- Saves space. Nothing swings into the room or onto the deck, so you can place furniture right up to the door.
- Lots of glass. Large panes and slim frames mean more daylight and a wider view.
- Easy everyday use. A light push opens it, and a screen slides right alongside.
- Usually the budget-friendly option for the same opening size.
Keep in mind: only half the opening is usable at a time, and the track needs an occasional cleaning to keep it gliding smoothly.
French patio doors
French doors are hinged and swing open, either as a pair or as one active door with a fixed panel beside it.
- Classic, elegant look that suits traditional and craftsman-style homes.
- Wide, open entrance. With both doors open you get the full width — great for entertaining and moving furniture.
- Tight seal. Doors close against weatherstripping on all sides, and multi-point locks are widely available.
Keep in mind: you need clear space for the doors to swing, either inside the room or out onto the patio, and they usually cost more than a slider of the same size.
Side by side
| Sliding | French | |
|---|---|---|
| Space needed | None — slides in place | Room for doors to swing |
| Opening width | About half the door | Full width with both open |
| Light and view | Maximum glass | More frame, classic grid options |
| Style | Clean, modern | Traditional, elegant |
| Typical cost | Lower | Higher |
So which one should you choose?
Choose a sliding door if your room is tight on space, you want the biggest possible view, or you'd like the most value for your budget.
Choose French doors if you have room for the swing, love a traditional look, or want a wide-open doorway for entertaining.
Whichever style you pick, look for ENERGY STAR® certified glass, sturdy locks and a professional installation. Even the best door will leak air and water if it isn't installed square, level and properly sealed.
