New windows on the way? Here's how installation day usually goes, how long it takes, and a few simple ways to get your home ready.
Replacing your windows is exciting — and if you've never done it before, it's natural to wonder what installation day actually looks like. Will the house be open to the weather? How messy will it be? Do you need to be home? Here's how a typical replacement day goes and how you can get ready.
Before the crew arrives
A little preparation makes the day go faster and protects your belongings:
- Clear a path. Move furniture about three feet away from each window being replaced.
- Take down window treatments. Remove blinds, curtains, rods and anything on the sills.
- Protect fragile items. Take pictures and decorations off nearby walls — there's some vibration when old frames come out.
- Plan for pets and kids. Keep them in a room that isn't being worked on, since windows will be open for short periods.
- Clear the outside, too. Move patio furniture, grills and planters away from the windows, and make sure there's room to park near the house.
How installation day usually goes
1. Walk-through. The crew lead confirms which windows are being replaced and answers any last questions.
2. Protecting your home. Floors and furniture near the work areas are covered with drop cloths.
3. One window at a time. Each old window is removed, the opening is cleaned and checked, and the new window is set in place. Working one opening at a time means your home is never left wide open.
4. Sealing and insulating. This is the step that matters most. Each window is leveled, insulated around the frame and sealed inside and out, so it keeps out air and water for years.
5. Trim and finishing. Interior and exterior trim is finished so the new windows look like they've always been there.
6. Clean-up and final walk-through. Old windows and debris are hauled away, and you'll test each new window together to make sure it opens, closes and locks smoothly.
How long does it take?
Many whole-house projects are finished in one to two days. Larger homes, custom shapes or any repairs found once an old window comes out can add time. You'll get a timeline for your project with your quote, so there are no surprises.
Do I need to be home?
We recommend being there at the start for the walk-through and at the end to check the finished windows. In between, the crew can work while you go about your day.
After installation
Peel off any stickers, keep the paperwork for your warranty, and enjoy a quieter, more comfortable home. Cleaning is simple: mild soap and water on the glass and frames, and an occasional wipe of the tracks.
