The Federal Tax Credit for Energy-Efficient Windows Has Ended: What Georgia Homeowners Should Know

For the last few years, homeowners who installed energy-efficient windows could take a federal tax credit for part of the cost. That credit has now ended. If you've been planning new windows, or you heard about the credit from a friend or neighbor, here's what changed, who can still claim it, and what it means for your project.

The short version

  • The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (often called the 25C credit) does not apply to windows, doors or skylights installed after December 31, 2025.
  • What counts is the date the windows were installed, not the date you signed, ordered or paid.
  • If your windows were installed in 2025, you may still be able to claim the credit for that year.
  • There is currently no federal tax credit for windows installed in 2026, so there's no reason to hold off on a project while waiting for one.

What the credit was

The credit covered 30% of the cost of qualifying energy-efficient products, with yearly limits:

  • Windows and skylights: up to $600 a year in total.
  • Exterior doors: up to $250 per door and $500 a year in total.
  • All qualifying home improvements together: up to $1,200 a year.

The credit was based on the cost of the windows themselves; installation labor didn't count. So for most whole-house window projects, the credit topped out at $600, however many windows you replaced. It helped, but it was a small part of the total cost.

Why it ended

The credit was originally scheduled to run through 2032. The federal tax law signed on July 4, 2025, often called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, ended it early. The IRS states that the credit is not allowed for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

"I ordered in 2025, but my windows went in this year"

Unfortunately, that doesn't qualify. Replacement windows are made to order, so many projects that were signed in late 2025 were installed in 2026. Because the rule is based on when the windows are placed in service, which means installed and ready to use, a 2026 installation falls after the cutoff even if you paid in 2025.

Installed in 2025 and never claimed it?

If your windows were installed in 2025, the credit applies to your 2025 tax return. If you already filed without it, you may be able to file an amended return. In general, you have up to three years after filing to amend, but a tax professional can tell you what applies to you.

To claim it, your tax preparer will need the product details and the manufacturer's identification number for each qualifying window, which is reported on IRS Form 5695. If Crescent Windows and Doors installed your windows in 2025 and you need help finding that information, give us a call.

Are there other incentives in Georgia?

Right now, there isn't a dedicated federal or Georgia program for replacement windows on their own. Georgia's home energy rebate programs, run with federal funds, have focused on whole-home energy upgrades and electrical work, their funding is limited, and their rules have changed during 2026. Utility programs also come and go and usually focus on things like insulation, air sealing and heating and cooling equipment.

It's still worth a quick look before you start a project. Check the state's site at energyrebates.georgia.gov and ask your electric provider what they currently offer.

Is it still worth replacing your windows?

For most homeowners, yes, if your windows are due. The tax credit was capped at a few hundred dollars. The bigger benefits of new windows never depended on it:

  • Lower energy bills, every month. Low-E glass, insulated glass units and well-sealed frames cut the heat coming in during our long Georgia summers and the heat escaping in winter.
  • A more comfortable home. No more drafts or hot spots near the windows, and your heating and cooling system doesn't have to work as hard.
  • A quieter home. Double-pane glass and tight seals noticeably reduce outside noise.
  • Easier care and better looks. Windows that open, close and lock smoothly, are easy to clean, and add curb appeal when it's time to sell.

Should you wait for the credit to come back?

No one can say whether Congress will bring back a credit for windows, and nothing is in place today. Waiting has its own cost: drafty, foggy or hard-to-open windows keep raising your energy bills, and problems like soft or rotting frames get worse over time. If you're seeing signs it's time to replace your windows, it usually makes sense to move ahead on your own timeline.

If you're planning ahead, keep in mind that replacement windows take about 5 to 7 weeks from order to installation. See when is the best time to replace windows in North Atlanta.
